Other Poems Of Her

Hope was but a timid friend .. Like a false guard.
Went, and ne’er returned again!

Those who follow earthly pleasure
Heavenly Knowledge will not lead
Wisdom hides from them her treasure,
Virtue bids them evil speed!

Vainly may their hearts, repenting,
Seek for aid in future years –
Wisdom scorned knows no relenting –
Virtue is not won by tears

‘Twas grief enough to think mankind
All hollow servile insincere –
But worse to trust to my own mind
And find the same corruption there

Then dawns the Invisible; the Unseen its truth reveals;
My outward sense is gone, my inward essence feels:
Its wings are almost free – its home, its harbour found,
Measuring the gulf, it stoops, and dares the final bound.

And whispering ever, when I pray,
‘God will repay – God will repay!’
He does repay and soon and well
The deeds that turn his earth to hell
The wrongs that aim a venomed dart
Through nature at the Eternal Heart.
